What to do when you're in an AFTERNOON SLUMP

Updated: Jan 6, 2020

Ever find yourself feeling tired, lazy, or unmotivated during the day specifically between the times of 1-4PM?

If that's the case, you my friend have the case of the "Afternoon Slumps." As you feel your energy levels start to disintegrate, bear witness to your creative cloud evaporating, and feel your inner sloth kick into high gear, try to break the cycle by incorporating these few things to do to get yourself out of it:

1. GET A DOSE OF VITAMIN D

One of the best ways to reboot your energy is to get some Vitamin D. Naturally energize yourself by surrounding yourself with nature and sunshine. Go for a walk, jog, or bike ride. Sit in your backyard or on your porch and soak up the warmth of the sun's rays. Get your fix for at least 10-15 minutes. If you're feeling generous with yourself, go for the full half hour.

2. DRINK WATER

Sometimes lack of hydration can cause you to feel sluggish. Lack of enough water intake can also affect us in ways that we are not always aware of or knowledgeable of how they happen, such as feeling irritable, having a broken concentration, and creating mental blockages. Invest in a nice water bottle, develop a water tracking system, or even set a timer on your phone as a reminder. This simple resource of a natural and essential refreshment could be just what you need to perk up. Sugar and caffeinated drinks are not always the answer.

3. MOVE YOUR BODY

Now I'm no gym junkie or athlete, or personal trainer but I do know that any form of daily movement is essential and extremely beneficial for boosting your system. Obvious enough right? Now get your lazy self up. Don't even think, just go do it. I don't care what it is, but go do some form of physical activity and get your steps in. Do some stretches, learn those yoga moves that you've been thinking of for the longest time, give me ten jumping jacks, heck go put on some of your favorite music and dance around your room/house/apartment/dorm/office. Your body will appreciate it and you'll automatically earn yourself a gold star for productivity for the day too.

4. DECLUTTER

No matter area of your life is cluttered, declutter it. Whether it be cleaning your room, doing the dishes in your sink, going through out your email inbox, or even that annoying notification that always pops up on your phone to make space on your iCloud. You can also declutter by having a mental overload dump. Take out a journal or even just a piece of paper and write down anything that is currently on your mind. Although declutter may sound like such dreading task, it is honestly one of the most easiest tasks you can do during your day. It is actually very therapeutic and extremely satisfying. If you're going to choose to be a bump on a log, might as well accomplish something simple right where you are.
