What is the TRUE Definition of a Healthy Sense of Self?

Updated: Jan 6, 2020

"SELF LOVE" & "SELF-REDISCOVERY"

ree

Seems to be some of the of the most famous phrases I see and hear from most people of my generation. But what exactly do these words mean? More specifically, how exactly did you reach that point of realization and once you did, what exactly did you do with that found love?  I was sitting in one of my favorite cafe shops the other day, reading one of my favorite books by Matthew Kelly, "Perfectly Yourself" and this particular passage really stood out to me:

"In today's culture, I notice that so many young people today are unconsciously promoting a self-centeredness that can absolutely paralyze the human spirit."

Then it got me thinking, am I too focused on my own personal desires enough to the point to where all that matters in this point in time are my own needs? Using the phrase self love could have two different meanings. One plainly being spoken for itself and second either someone or something pushed you to a point to where you lost your balance and that sense of well being. Now I will not say that this applies to everyone, but usually from what I see today the second usage of the implication of self love is mostly the case. Which brings me to another passage of Kelly's words of wisdom to follow up on:

"Too often as a society we focus on what personal advantage we can gain from a situation. Too often the rights of an individual are celebrated at the expense of the common good. Too often we advocate self determinism and overlook the fact that our destinies are linked. Too often we allow self-interest to rule our hearts, minds, and spirits and overlook the needs of the people that surround us."

If you would, take a few seconds to list just a few things of what "self love" means to you. Write them down. Or think about them in your head. Here are mine. When I think of the phrase "Self Love" I think of Peace, Acceptance, and Happiness. I have PEACE in my heart to where I know that any decisions I make or actions that I take are solely for myself. That I have no intentions or hidden agendas to show someone up or make myself appear to being better than anyone else. To have no grudges toward anyone or any life experience which may hold me back from achieving all the greatness I know I have to become the best version of me. I have ACCEPTANCE for what is and for what has been done, more so for what is yet to come. I am open-minded for opportunities, experiences, new sights, new sceneries, and for many blessings by extending my welcoming, open arms. And lastly most certainly not least, having AUTHENTIC HAPPINESS for as I know is the common life goal I share with each and every human being on this earth and to be mindful of it.

We are more similar to one another more than we think. So whatever has knocked you down to get towards your rediscovery, share your ways! If you truly and naturally have a burst of good energy, spread it everywhere! Love yourself more and more every day, YES! Rediscover what fuels your fire, YES! Whether it may be consciously or unconsciously known, do not keep all that love for yourself. Self love inquires LOVING SELF-LESS.
